Where is stuckness & friction holding you back?
One of my all-time favourite memories is when I was 6 years old, and my dad took me to Fun City in Victoria. It was my first chance to drive a go-kart, and I was exploding with excitement! But when I slammed down on both the gas and brake, I was going nowhere fast. I was frozen in animation in this moment. I can see it in my mind’s eye now as clear as it was then.
It was my first lesson in how resistance can hold us back, even when the desire to move forward is strong.
And it’s a metaphor I use with my clients. Accelerator is on. And, Brakes are on. Going nowhere, fast!
Gas vs. Brakes
In your personal life, "brakes" might look like avoiding difficult conversations with loved ones, delaying decisions about health and fitness routines, or hesitating to set boundaries with others. These forms of resistance can prevent you from experiencing deeper relationships, more energy, a better body, and personal fulfillment, even when you want to move forward.
In business, “brakes” can show up as indecision about making a key hire, reluctance to delegate tasks (because ‘only I do it how it needs to be done’), or procrastination or lack of clarity and certainty on marketing strategies. These are all forms of resistance that keep you stuck, even when your foot is on the gas to grow your business.
If your gas pedal is down – that is, you are at least somewhat driven, getting work done, setting some goals, focusing on getting important work done… you are doing the do!
But if you brake pedal is on too – that is, you don’t prioritize all that well every day, fail to carve out strategic / reflection time (in the key areas) in your schedule every week, haven’t consistently worked on busting up limiting beliefs, you have a mind that plays ‘enemy’ more than it plays ‘best friend’, and don’t specifically focus on your own growth (with proof of results) each and every week – your brakes are on for sure.
Personal Growth is a concept you apply in certain areas, or maybe listen to podcasts or books, but if you are being totally honest with yourself, you rarely instill a new habit from information gained, and you have areas of your life you are simply not happy with. And have lost the power and confidence to change it.
And with recent research showing that negative thoughts and emotions have 3X more power than positive thoughts and emotions, it’s easy to see why the human ‘negativity bias’ is a real thing! This also contributes to why most people remain stuck in areas like health, wealth, relationships, career, adventure/fun, etc… because your mind often operates as your biggest enemy instead of your best friend. We listen to our own voice first. You believe it. It has power over your actions.
Your resistance overcomes your forward motion. Brakes > gas. You are stuck.
You don’t have to take my word for it though… if there is ANY area of your life where you are not happy with your results…is that not proof enough? Why would the situation and conditions even exist if “everything is fine”.
Anyways…I don’t want to convince. It’s either accurate for you, or it’s not. Denial aside.
How to Remove the Brakes
If you are being totally honest with yourself and you can be strong enough to admit you have an area of your life you want to improve, I have a new tool I’ve designed called The Friction Audit. It is a complimentary tool and is a strong at identifying where you are feeling stagnant, stuck resistance. Where so much energy and bandwidth are being burned off and wasted!
Imagine what it would be like for the brakes to be right off. To be only gas. Only forward momentum. Only smooth progress. Flow state. Ease. No friction or drama. Just healthy habits, better relationships, cleaner energy and health, better performance, more success – whatever your intentional goals and priorities are. What would that do for you? And how would that feel having that?!
This tool is something I’m offering for a limited time because I’m passionate about helping others remove those brakes. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re serious about creating lasting change, reach out. Email me – info@coachingwithchris.ca
When you complete the friction audit, you’ll see where your attention needs to shift. If you want to book 30 minutes for a complimentary planning session, just let me know.
