It has been a week I’ll never ever forget!
Just back from 4 days in Baja Mexico where a group of us impact-driven entrepreneurs built a house in under 72 hours for a family who had been living in a mold-infested trailer with their 6-year old son, Irvin.
Squalor is an adequate word. We were shown images.
How hard someone works does not equate to fair pay and opportunity.
The Ramirez-Lopez family are an amazing threesome. Hard working. Appreciative. Dedicated. Family-first values.
We got connected to them through a friend’s organization – the Impact Circle. And partnered with another organization called Baja Bound, who regularly connects groups with families and provides the blueprint and all the supplies (and a few builders!) to guide us in building the home.
As you might guess, this experience is life-altering. You can’t watch a reel or read this blog and receive even close to the full impact – I don’t have the words to do it justice.
One thing I can say is that the impact RECEIVED rivals the impact given to the family. It’s more like the family gave US a gift, as much as we them.
A beautifully poignant moment was when the keys were handed over that final afternoon to the family (to mom Joanna), and because they had never lived in a home with a lockable door, there was a moment of figuring out how the key works. It was just one of those moments that you could never recreate.
The next moment they are stepping into their new home – the true inside reveal! New home. New walls. New beds. New dinner table. New clothes. Groceries. Their first floor that isn't dirt.
A house as full as our hearts.
Their show of gratitude was more than repayment.
This experience has changed me – I know this. And I can’t even say I’ve had time to process the whole experience, even a fraction. Or to say how I’m going to go about things differently – I just know that I will be.
I’ve already made a few changes in how I go about my day. Less worry. More gratitude. Less hustle. More belief. Less performance. More service.
Those sounds like good lessons to me.
Thank you Ramirez-Lopez family. My heart is forever bonded with yours.
That sounds amazing, Chris. How honourable of you to pay it forward. Thank you for sharing.
